Platform Transfer by Rickshaw: The Distinctive Station Experience

Indian Railways has a unique place in Asia, connecting even the smallest villages to the capital, Delhi, and all corners of the country.

In this vast network, there are several interesting and famous stations, and one such station is located in Bihar.

At this station, passengers arriving on Platforms 1 and 2 have to take a rickshaw. But here’s the surprise: the distance between these two platforms is nearly 2 kilometers, making it quite a challenge for passengers.

Interestingly, you won’t even find Platform 1 at this station, as the station starts with Platform 2.

If your train arrives at Platform 1, you’ll have to go to the other end of this 2-kilometer-long station.

The Unique Station in Bihar

The famous Barauni Junction in Bihar does not have Platform 1. Travelers often find themselves in confusion, searching for Platform 1, but it doesn’t exist.

This station has a total of 9 platforms, and trains always depart from Platforms 2 to 9. The station announcements also mention these platform numbers.

The reason behind this unusual setup is that Barauni Junction was constructed during the British era in 1883.

At that time, trains usually started from Platform 1. However, Platform 1 was mostly used for loading goods.

Local residents began to complain as they couldn’t find Platform 1. During that time, the station was built on limited land,

and the railway had insufficient land for expanding Platform 1. So, later, the railway decided to build a new station with Platform 1.

The 2-Kilometer Dilemma

The new station at Barauni Junction, located 2 kilometers away from the previous one, was designed to start from Platform 1. However, as time passed,

the platform numbers changed, and now it starts with Platform 2. Over time, the number of platforms increased from 1 to 9, but Platform 1 remained 2 kilometers away.

Even today, Platform 1 at this station is used primarily for loading goods, just as it was in the past.

The Transformation of Platform Numbers

The country’s only station that used to start from Platform 2 is now changing its platform numbers. While there used to be 9 platforms,

there are now 8, and the platform numbering will begin with Platform 1. The station located 2 kilometers away from Platform 1 will now be known as New Barauni Junction.
