The Unique Sanctuary: Meera Bai and Lord Krishna’s Shared Abode

Hanuman

In the city of Amer, amidst the grand celebrations of Lord Krishna’s birthday, stands a temple that is truly exceptional.

It’s not just any temple dedicated to Lord Krishna; rather, it’s the only temple where you’ll find not Radha, but the devotee Meera alongside Lord Krishna.

This ancient temple, approximately 478 years old, is located on Sagar Road in Jaipur and is known as the “Jagat Shiromani Temple.”

Unraveling the History

To understand the history and significance of this temple, we need to go back around 600 years.

During the time when devotion to Lord Krishna was fervently embraced by Meera Bai in the Mewar region of Rajasthan, about 150 years later,

in 1576, after the Battle of Haldighati, it was transported from Chittorgarh to Amer by Raja Man Singh I.

A Unique Blend of Deities

Inside this temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu, the idol of Meera Bai was placed alongside Lord Krishna’s idol.

Subsequently, Rani Kanakavati, the wife of Raja Man Singh I, named this extraordinary temple “Jagat Shiromani Temple” in memory of her 14-year-old son, Kunwar Jagat Singh, which translates to “the jewel on Lord Vishnu’s head.”

Exquisite Architecture Beyond the Mughal Era

This temple serves as an exceptional example of Rajput architecture. Despite being built during the Mughal rule,

it doesn’t display the influence of Mughal craftsmanship seen in contemporary temples. Instead, it is a testament to the traditional South Indian architectural style.

Craftsmanship and Materials

Constructed entirely from marble, the temple sits on a 15-foot-high platform. It boasts intricate carvings in yellow, white, and black marble.

Visitors can admire the artistry in the form of sculptures depicting mythological tales, artistic painting, ornate arches, doorways, and pillars.

When you visit Jaipur/Amer, don’t forget to witness the divine presence of Lord Krishna and Meera Bai together in this remarkable temple.
