The Unique Architecture and History of London Fort
Also known as the Baulikot Fort, it was constructed in 1791 by the Gorkha rulers. Perched amidst the heart of Pithoragarh city, this fort offers tourists a glimpse of Pithoragarh’s beauty.
The fort’s walls have 152 holes, originally used for firing guns. These holes provide a mesmerizing view of the sunrise and sunset.
Impressive Dimensions and Architecture
The London Fort stands tall with a length of 88.5 meters and a width of 40 meters, constructed entirely from stones.
Legend has it that there was a secret Gupta Gate in the fort, although it is not visible today. In ancient times, Gorkha soldiers and local rulers resided here. The fort also had a prison and a courthouse.
It is said that there used to be a well inside the fort, which is now closed and has a peepal tree planted there.
Following the Sugauli Treaty in 1815, the British changed the fort’s name from Baulikot Fort to London Fort.
During 1910-20, the British carried out renovations. Today, the fort is mostly in ruins, but it stands as a testament to the region’s historical significance.
