In 1961, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi built a cottage in Rishikesh to teach yoga and meditation. He gained worldwide recognition for promoting Transcendental Meditation and explaining the scientific significance of yoga and meditation.
In the late 1960s, the famous Beatles band came to explore meditation here.
John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr stayed at Maharishi Mahesh Yogi’s ashram in 1968, where they received meditation instruction.
Pictures of all these celebrities can be found in the photo gallery at this ashram. Due to the Beatles’ visit, it is also known as the Beatles Ashram.
The Sacred Confluence at Triveni Ghat
Rishikesh’s Triveni Ghat is where three sacred rivers meet – Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati.
According to Hindu mythology, this ghat is considered the holiest of all, as it marks the confluence of these three rivers.
Daily rituals are performed here three times – in the morning, afternoon, and evening. The evening ritual is known as the Maha Aarti and is famous worldwide, attracting people from all around.
Astha Path – Riverside Promenade
The Astha Path in Rishikesh is a riverside promenade along the Ganga. It was constructed to provide a better environment for people to enjoy the Ganges’ serene beauty away from the hustle and bustle of Rishikesh’s streets.
This path stretches approximately three kilometers from Triveni Ghat to the dam. Thousands of people visit this path regularly during the morning and evening hours.
Laxman Jhula and its Significance
Laxman Jhula is a bridge with religious significance. It is named after Lord Laxman, who performed severe penance here to absolve himself of the sin of killing a Brahmin.
Laxman, Lord Rama’s younger brother, is said to have crossed the Ganges with the help of a jute rope at this very spot.
Hence, the bridge is known as Laxman Jhula. On the western bank of the bridge, there is a temple dedicated to Lord Laxman, where he meditated intensely.
Additionally, there are 12 Shiva lingams made of sand here, believed to be created by Lord Laxman during his penance.
Neer Waterfall – Rishikesh’s Largest Cascade
The Neer Waterfall, also known as Neerghad Waterfall, is Rishikesh’s largest waterfall. It attracts locals and tourists alike who come to marvel at its natural beauty.
Located two kilometers above the Badrinath Highway, a motorable road takes you to this waterfall.
It is renowned as Rishikesh’s most significant waterfall and provides a delightful experience upon arrival.
