The rock on which the palace rested was quite huge. It’s said that Ravana’s kingdom stretched from Badulla in central Sri Lanka to Anuradhapura,
Kandy, Polonnaruwa, and Nuwara Eliya. The palace is believed to have been built by Kubera.
A Place Where Sita was Held
Sigiriya Rock contains the remains of an ancient palace. This place has terraced gardens, ponds, canals, and fountains.
It’s said that Ravana kept Mata Sita here for a few days. Later, she was moved to another place. The palace’s grandeur includes many remarkable features, but the most astonishing was its water system.
Despite being at a great height, the water system of the palace was remarkably advanced. Beautiful gardens were also created for the queens here.
The Lift to the Palace
Around 1,000 steps led to Ravana’s palace, yet there was a lift to reach the top.
According to local accounts, in the jungles of Ragalla, at an elevation of about 8,000 feet, Ravana’s mummified body was placed.
A unique embalming substance was applied to the body to prevent decay. However, there is no solid proof for this.
