During festive seasons, getting a confirmed railway ticket to go home can be quite challenging.
To address this issue, the Indian Railways has introduced the Alternate Train Accommodation Scheme (ATAS), also known as the alternative option.
How the ATAS Works
When booking tickets through IRCTC, passengers have the option to select the alternative train.
Choosing this option does not guarantee a confirmed ticket but attempts to provide a confirmed ticket on another train traveling the same route, based on the availability of vacant seats.
Understanding the Process
Once you book your ticket through IRCTC, you can choose the alternative train option. If your ticket doesn’t get confirmed after the final chart preparation, the ATAS comes into play. You receive an SMS with a specific number.
By calling that number, you can inquire about available vacant seats on other trains running on the same route. If you agree, you’ll be issued a confirmed ticket for the alternative train.
Features of the ATAS
The ATAS offers options for trains departing within 30 minutes to 72 hours of your original train’s departure.
There are no extra charges imposed by the railway; any additional fare is refunded. Passengers can select from a maximum of 7 trains under this scheme.
The ATAS primarily caters to passengers on the waiting list, ensuring a smoother travel experience.
