1.Sabarmati Ashram, Ahmedabad
Sabarmati Ashram, situated along the banks of the Sabarmati River, served as Gandhi’s home from 1917 to 1930.
Here, he established a school focusing on physical labor, agriculture, and literacy. This is also where he initiated the famous Dandi March in protest against the British salt tax.
2. Champaran Village, Bihar
During his 1917 visit to Champaran, Gandhi realized the exploitation of farmers by the British due to ignorance and illiteracy.
He established voluntary organizations here to improve their economic and educational conditions, initiating the Champaran Satyagraha in April 1917.
3. Kirti Mandir, Porbandar
Kirti Mandir, located in Porbandar, is the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi.
This memorial houses a library with books on Gandhian philosophy and a prayer hall where prayers from all religions are conducted.
4. Raj Ghat, Delhi
Raj Ghat in Delhi is the memorial site where Mahatma Gandhi was cremated.
His last words, “Hey Ram,” are inscribed on a black marble platform here. Special events and prayers are organized here on Gandhi Jayanti, the 2nd of October.
5. Sevagram Ashram, Wardha
Sevagram Ashram served as the headquarters for Gandhi’s constructive work and the main center for the Gramodaya movement.
He stayed here for almost one and a half years, working on programs related to rural development and cleanliness.
6. Gandhi Memorial Museum, Madurai
In 1921, Madurai became significant in Gandhi’s life when he adopted the loincloth here, symbolizing simplicity.
The Gandhi Memorial Museum showcases his life through pictures, quotes, and paintings. Gandhi’s hut stands in front of the main building.
7. Saraswatha Niketanam, Vetapalem
Located in Vetapalem, Andhra Pradesh, Saraswatha Niketanam is a private library dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi and the freedom struggle.
Established in 1918, it contains a wealth of Telugu literature. Gandhi laid the foundation for a new wing of this library in 1927.
8. Gandhi Smriti
Formerly known as Birla House, Gandhi Smriti is where Mahatma Gandhi spent his last 144 days before his assassination.
It was once the residence of the Birla family but is now a museum dedicated to his life.
9. National Gandhi Museum, New Delhi
Located in the vicinity of Raj Ghat in Delhi, the National Gandhi Museum is one of the most prestigious museums dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi.
It houses his personal belongings, including his sandals, spectacles, utensils, and the stick he used during the famous Dandi March.
10. Aga Khan Palace, Pune
Aga Khan Palace in Pune holds historical significance as it was the place where Mahatma Gandhi, Kasturba Gandhi, and his secretary Mahadev Desai were interned after the Quit India Movement in 1942.
Both Kasturba and Mahadev Desai passed away here. Today, the palace displays photographs and paintings depicting Gandhi’s life and philosophy.
