The Nehru Planetarium in New Delhi is one of India’s best museums. It’s located in the Teen Murti Bhavan complex, officially known as the ‘Nehru Memorial Museum and Library.
‘ This was the former residence of India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, and is now a museum dedicated to his memory.
The Nehru Memorial Fund was established in 1964 to promote his ideas, and it initiated the construction of the Nehru Planetarium with the aim of promoting astronomy education.
The Sky Theater at Nehru Planetarium is very popular, attracting over 200,000 visitors annually. This theater, shaped like a dome, presents information about stars and planets.
Its programs use visuals like cartoons, paintings, computer animation, video clips, and special 3D effects to educate and entertain.
The Nehru Planetarium is open six days a week and only closed on Mondays. Tickets for entry and the Sky Theater experience range from ₹70 to ₹200.
The Toilet Museum of Delhi
Operated by Sulabh International, the Toilet Museum of Delhi is dedicated to the global history of sanitation and toilets.
According to Time magazine, it’s one of the ten weirdest museums in the world. Dr. Bindeshwar Pathak, a social activist and founder of the Sulabh Sanitation and Social Reform Movement, established this museum in 1992.
He received national and international awards, including the Stockholm Water Prize in 2009. The museum’s goal was to shed light on the need for toilets.
It examines efforts from various parts of the world to address sanitation issues in the country. The museum is open every day except Sunday and offers free entry.
Delhi Metro Museum
The Delhi Metro Museum is the only metro museum in South Asia. It provides information about India’s first modern transportation system.
Established in 1995, it was opened to the public in December 2002. The museum is open six days a week, from 6:00 AM to 11:00 PM, with Mondays being the day it’s closed. Admission requires a token purchase of ₹8 per person.
Museum of Illusions
The Museum of Illusions in Delhi, established in 2021, showcases various optical illusions that can baffle the mind.
The museum is divided into three sections where you can experience a variety of illusions, some of which are mind-boggling.
These include the Vortex Tunnel, Clone Table, and Building of Illusion. The museum is open seven days a week, from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM.
Ticket prices vary, with rates set at ₹500 per person before 12:00 PM and ₹520 for children and ₹650 for adults after 12:00 PM.
Camera’s Journey Museum
Established in 2009, the Camera’s Journey Museum, located in the basement of photographer, historian, archivist, and social worker Aditya Arya, is the largest non-profit center for photographic art in Southeast Asia.
It’s a unique public-private partnership between the India Photo Archive Foundation and the Gurugram Municipal Corporation.
The museum dedicates 18,000 square feet to the art of photography. The Camera’s Journey Museum is only closed on Mondays, and you can visit it between 11:00 AM and 7:00 PM on any other day. Ticket prices range from ₹200 to ₹300.
