Mehrangarh Fort, located in Rajasthan, India, is one of the many forts that attract tourists from all over India and the world.

What makes this fort special is its age – it’s over 500 years old, and it’s the largest fort in India.

India is often called the land of forts, and here, you can find forts that are either transformed into luxurious hotels or have turned into ruins over time.

These forts each have their unique stories and carry rich historical significance. Some forts are even mysterious, making tourists hesitant to visit them, categorizing them as haunted places. Now, let’s explore Mehrangarh Fort in detail.

A Fortress from the 15th Century

This fort dates back to the 15th century when it was founded by Rao Jodha. However, it was Maharaja Jaswant Singh who completed its construction.

The fort stands tall at an elevation of 125 meters, situated right in the heart of Jodhpur city. Tourists flock to see this fort from both within the country and abroad.

It’s considered a symbol of India’s rich heritage. The fort boasts of high and thick walls that make it appear massive.

There are seven gates in the fort, and the first gate is adorned with sharp spikes to deter elephant attacks. Inside the fort, you’ll find structures like Moti Mahal, Phool Mahal, and Sheesh Mahal. The fort also houses a temple dedicated to Chamunda Mata.

The Enigmatic Story of the Fort

Legend has it that before the construction of the fort, there was a hermit living in this area. The hermit had a small source of water here.

When the king asked the hermit to leave the area for the fort’s construction, the hermit cursed that the water source would dry up.

Since then, this entire region has faced a scarcity of water. Now, Mehrangarh Fort has been transformed into a grand hotel.
