In a move to provide more convenience to traveling mothers, the Indian Railways has announced plans to introduce baby berth facilities in all its trains.

According to sources, the railway company will invest in the facility and promote itself on trains in exchange.

The proposal was initially put forth by the company, which was then accepted by the Railways.

Changes in Child Fare and Booking Process

It’s important to note that the railways now charge full fare for children between the ages of five and twelve, instead of the previous 50 percent.

Hence, the facility of baby berth will not be provided for free, and female passengers with babies may have to pay 50 percent more fare than usual.

However, a final decision has not been taken yet, and after approval from the Railway Board, female passengers will be able to book baby births online through changes in the software of the Center for Railway Information System (CRIS).

Improving Safety and Convenience

Passengers have suggested making the baby berth facility more secure, which was introduced on the Lucknow Mail train a year ago.

They have also demanded changes in its design to prevent inconvenience to other passengers.

The Railway Board has decided to expand the facility of at least two baby berths in AC-3 coaches of all trains, taking into account these suggestions.

Folding and Covering the Baby Berth

The baby berth facility will be foldable under the main berth when not in use, according to a senior Railway Board official.

Passengers have suggested covering the baby berths from all sides and taking measures to ensure that babies are not harmed if they fall from the middle or upper berths.

Addressing the Storage Problem

Presently, the provision of folding the baby berth under the main berth causes storage problems.

Passengers have suggested a slight technique to incorporate the baby berth under the main berth without folding.

The Railway Board is considering these suggestions and will make a final decision on the provision of baby berths in all Mail-Express and Premium trains.
