If you’ve ever taken a train journey, you might have traveled on different types of trains like local or express ones.

But have you heard about a unique train where there are neither windows nor doors in its compartments? This special train is operated by the railway,

and it’s quite different from regular passenger trains. Let’s learn more about this exceptional train.

The NMG Train: New Modified Goods Train

These special trains are called NMG trains, which stands for New Modified Goods trains.

They are a kind of freight train that carries goods from one state to another, just like other cargo trains.

However, NMG trains have some distinctive features. When you look at them, they might resemble passenger trains, but all the windows and doors are closed.

The compartments in NMG trains are prepared by converting passenger train coaches. When converted, their periodic maintenance increases, and they can reach a speed of 75 kilometers per hour.

Reasons Behind Creating these Trains

Regular passenger train coaches, known as ICF coaches, usually have a lifespan of around 20 to 25 years. Some coaches might not even last 20 years in service.

To save costs, services for these coaches are provided for free. After being retired from passenger service, these coaches undergo a process called Periodic Overhauling.

During this process, they are transformed into auto carriers. This is how they become NMG trains.

They are designed in a way that makes it easy to load and unload cars, mini trucks, and tractors.

Why the Windows and Doors Remain Closed

An interesting feature of NMG trains is that all the windows and doors are kept closed. These coaches are prepared by modifying retired passenger train coaches.

This is why all the windows and doors are sealed shut. This design makes loading and unloading goods easier.

Additionally, in trains with closed windows and doors, no one can engage in any mischief or unauthorized activities.

How They’re Used

NMG trains are especially useful for transporting vehicles like cars and tractors. These trains are used primarily for transporting these kinds of goods.

They play a significant role in moving goods from one state to another. These trains have a notable impact on the country’s economy.
