Bihar’s Bodhgaya is renowned worldwide because of Lord Gautam Buddha. This holy place holds great significance for Buddhists globally.
However, another significant Buddhist site in Bihar is the Dungeshwari Cave. The Dungeshwari Cave, also known as Mahakal Cave, is located about 12 kilometers northeast of Gaya.
It is believed that before Lord Buddha traveled to Bodhgaya to attain enlightenment, he meditated at this place for six years.
The Cave Temples on the Hill
On this hill, you can find a temple inside a cave that showcases Lord Buddha’s rigorous meditation through a golden statue.
Another cave features a massive 6-foot tall statue in memory of a specific phase in Buddha’s life.
The Myth Surrounding the Cave
There is a popular myth associated with this cave. It is said that during his intense self-mortification, Siddhartha Gautam (before he became Buddha) became extremely weak and emaciated.
A woman named Sujata, from a nearby village, saw his frail body and offered him food and water.
This act made Siddhartha realize that he couldn’t attain enlightenment through self-inflicted suffering. He then embarked on his journey to Bodhgaya.
The Hindu Temple in the Cave Complex
One of the cave temples in the Dungeshwari complex is dedicated to Hindu Goddess Dungeshwari. These cave temples are also known as Mahakal Cave Temples.
