On September 19th, we celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi in India. It marks the beginning of a ten-day festival dedicated to Lord Ganesha, ending on Anant Chaturdashi.
During Ganesh Chaturthi, people place Lord Ganesha’s idol in their homes and perform his worship.
Grand pandals (decorated tents) are also set up, where Ganesha is installed. Many people visit famous Ganesha temples across the country during this time.
Prominent Ganesh Temples in India
India boasts numerous ancient and significant Ganesh temples. Maharashtra is home to some of the most famous ones, with one located in Mumbai, known as Siddhivinayak Temple.
Celebrities often visit this temple as it is believed that praying here can fulfill one’s wishes. Hence, it’s named Siddhivinayak, meaning “the fulfiller of wishes.”
The History of Siddhivinayak Temple
Siddhivinayak Temple, dedicated to Lord Ganesha, is the most renowned temple in Mumbai, Maharashtra.
It is known for its unique idol of Lord Ganesha, where the trunk is turned to the right.
Such idols are called “Siddh Peeth,” and because Lord Ganesha is also known as Vinayak, the temple is called Siddhivinayak. The temple was constructed on November 19th, 1801.
How to Reach Siddhivinayak Temple
You can reach Siddhivinayak Temple in Mumbai by local train, taxi, or bus. The temple is located in South Mumbai.
If you choose to travel by local train, go to Dadar Railway Station and take a taxi to Prabhadevi from there.
The temple is only a 15-minute ride from the station, and you can also walk if you prefer.
Temple Timings
Siddhivinayak Temple is open for darshan (viewing the deity) from 5:30 AM to 9:50 PM. However, it can get very crowded, especially on Tuesdays, so be prepared for long queues if you plan to visit on that day.
Entering the Temple
There are two entrances to the temple: Siddhi Gate and Riddhi Gate.
Siddhi Gate offers free entry, and anyone can enter from this side, which is why it is usually very crowded.
On the other hand, Riddhi Gate has fewer crowds but requires an entrance fee.
If you have limited time and don’t want to wait in long lines, you can choose to pay for darshan.
Additionally, there are special arrangements for senior citizens, young children, mothers with infants, NRIs, and differently-abled individuals for a smoother entry into the temple.
