The Kalka-Shimla Toy Train is a popular way to reach Shimla. This railway line was built in 1903 and is among the most beautiful train journeys in India.

It covers a distance of 96 kilometers, passing through 20 railway stations, 103 tunnels, 800 bridges, and astonishing 900 curves.

The journey from Kalka near Chandigarh to Shimla takes about 5 hours. Along the way, you’ll witness captivating sights including long tunnels,

towering mountains, and winding paths, making the entire journey a delightful experience.

2. Nilgiri Mountain Railway: A Ride Amidst Nature’s Beauty

This is India’s only meter-gauge rack railway.

The Nilgiri Mountain Railway’s toy train takes travelers on a journey to the hill station of Ooty, which was established by the British for their journey to Chennai.

Running amidst rocky terrains and dense forests, this railway line covers a 46-kilometer track from Mettupalayam to Ooty.

It passes through 32 bridges and 16 tunnels. The most scenic stretch is between Mettupalayam and Coonoor.

3. Darjeeling Himalayan Railway: A Historic Mountain Ride

The Darjeeling Toy Train, officially known as the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, is the oldest among India’s historical mountain railways.

It carries passengers from the lower hills of Darjeeling to the higher elevations, passing through tea gardens and lush greenery.

This railway line covers an 80-kilometer journey from New Jalpaiguri, Siliguri, Kurseong, and Ghoom to Darjeeling in the state of West Bengal.

If you’re short on time, the 2-hour Joy Ride from Darjeeling is popular. Along the way, you can catch breathtaking views of the Kanchenjunga Mountain Range.
